Greetings Big Ten Family,
This is an exciting time to be a part of the Big Ten Club of Southern California! As the only official Big Ten Club based on the West Coast, we look forward to welcoming our new additions in 2024 and beyond. What makes the Big Ten Club so unique, aside from it being a multi-university Club, is the wonderful diversity and power of its members.
Established in 1933 – we initially represented Midwestern alumni transplanted to the West Coast (and its beautiful warm sunny weather). The conference then expanded East and soon the Big Ten Conference and Club will proudly add USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington. And now, more than ever, we offer the perfect place for such an amazing group of alumni to come together to socialize, network, make friends, serve our local community, and have fun celebrating rivalries with fellow esteemed members.
With incredible events such as the annual Person of the Year dinner, Rose Queen’s Mixer, access to Rose Bowl tickets directly thru our partnership with the Tournament of Roses – and more – the Big Ten Club is the place to be. We would love to have you be a part of the Club. And beyond just membership – we are always looking for people to become more actively involved.
We’d love for some enthusiastic, energetic members to step up and join the board to help create and plan events, give your alma mater extra visibility, help raise scholarship money, contribute to the community, represent us at Big Ten Media Days, make some life-long friendships, and more.
Go Big Ten!

Rose Bowl Tickets
One of the best benefits of affiliation with the Big Ten Club is the opportunity to purchase tickets to the annual January 1 Rose Bowl game – “The Granddaddy of them all” as our friend Keith Jackson would often say – and at face value. That tradition continues this year when we will have our ticket allotment ready to go on sale in early December. And while we will not know until December 3 which teams will play in the 2024 Rose Bowl game, we can share that you can purchase tickets now before they go on sale to the general public. The cost is $395 which includes excellent seats to the game, the annual Queen’s Mixer on December 14 and a nominal handling charge. Yes, it might be the best deal in town! Queen’s Mixer – Thursday, December 14 – Save the Date Held at the historic Valley Hunt Club in Pasadena – only a few blocks down the street from Tournament House – this annual Holiday tradition offers the opportunity to meet this year’s Rose Queen and her Court as well as Tournament of Roses president Alex Aghajnian and other Tournament of Roses volunteers and officials. Seeing the Valley Hunt Club during the holiday season makes for an evening that everyone who attends will not soon forget. 2024 Person of the Year Dinner One of the most cherished traditions of the Club is the annual Person of the Year dinner, often held in the spring at Tournament House in Pasadena. Past recipients of this award include Sherry Lansing (president and CEO of Paramount Studios), Keith Jackson (ABC television sportscaster), Barry Alvarez (head football coach and athletic director at Wisconsin), Kirk Herbstreit (ESPN football sportscaster) Steve Garvey (second baseman with the LA Dodgers), Keith Jackson (sportscaster), John Wooden (UCLA basketball coach), and many more luminaries with a connection to the Big Ten Conference. The Club is working now to select the 2024 recipient of this prestigious award and further details will be shared in the winter e-newsletter. But for now, please be on the lookout for additional information and plan to attend this special event. |
Call for Volunteers
Since 1932, the Big Ten Club of Southern California has been bringing together alumni from the Big Ten through a variety of entertaining events and programs that have served our members well over the years. As a volunteer-run organization – we have no professional staff to assist us – we rely solely on fellow volunteers to make it all happen, such as the Queen’s Mixer, the Person of the Year dinner, the selling and distribution of Rose Bowl tickets and so much more. However, we are now in need of new volunteers to help make happen all that we do. If you have interest in serving as a volunteer, or would like to learn more about the volunteer opportunities that are available, please contact former president Jim Jacobs at [email protected] for additional information. We can find a role for you and you might be surprised to find out how much fun a bunch of Spartans, Badgers, Wildcats, Fighting Illini, Cornhuskers – and more – can have when we all get together in a common cause of serving Big Ten alumni who live in Southern California! Los Angeles Regional Foodbank Community Service Project –Saturday, April 20, 2024 – Save the Date! The Club’s annual community service project at the LA Regional Foodbank returns on April 20. Break out your 2024 calendar now and make this cool event one of the first entries in it. We always have a great time while we spend the morning working to give back to the needy members of our community. Then following our ‘day of service’ we will head to Avila’s El Ranchito restaurant to get to know one another a little better over a cold drink and hot Mexican meal. Details to follow but, for now, please save the date and make plans to join us. |
Big Ten Club Conference Expansion in 2024
While many of us mourn the way things used to be and those classic rivalries and match ups, the world of college football is changing, and the Big Ten Conference is on the forefront of becoming a super conference.
What’s great about this is that we won’t have to travel as far to see our favorite teams play. Stay on the West Coast and see games at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), University of Oregon, University of Southern California (USC) and the University of Washington. These four schools join the conference in 2024. Go team!
We’re waiting for confirmation from Cambridge and Oxford as to when they’ll be joining the conference, but we may have issues with the correct definition of football. Stay tuned. But seriously, welcome Bruins, Ducks, Trojans and Huskies!
