May 2011

Dear Fellow BTC Members,

The Big Ten Club of Southern California has started its new calendar year.  We wrapped up an excellent year in early April by honoring Sherry Lansing, Northwestern University alum, as our 2011 Person of the Year.  Special thanks to our outgoing president Jim Jacobs on scheduling such a great honoree and to our auctioneer Derek Hildebrandt for his help in raising over $5000 for the Northwestern University scholarship fund.

In the next few months we have our annual Hollywood Bowl picnic and concert as well as our yearly Caucus with the Tournament of Roses.  Keep up with our club news and event calendar at  We hope to see you at some of our events.

We would love to hear from you.  If you have any comments, questions or suggestions please contact us.  We are always looking for new event ideas or ways to improve the club for our members.

Have a great summer and Go Big Ten!!

3:30 Picnic, 7:30 Concert
AAUM Members: $37 (Non-members: $45)
Picnic only: $14
Children under 2: FREE

Coming on August 21st, we've got a great summer day planned for the whole family!

First, join the UM Club of LA at Camrose Park for a fun filled Maize and Blue Picnic!  We've got a great spot in the Park reserved just for Wolverines, with food and fun all ready to go!  Fried chicken, sandwiches, potato salad, watermelon and more will all be there!  Old fashioned sack races, a pie eating contest, basketball toss and other games for all ages should make for an entertaining afternoon. Parents can relax and admire from under the trees and the picnic tables surrounding our area.  The Club will provide the food and the fun, but bring your own drinks!  Bring a basket of soda, some beer, and a bottle of wine!

At 7:15 we will walk the short 100 yards next door to the Hollywood Bowl to continue the evening with some great music.  In celebration of the 20th anniversary of our very own Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, John Mauceri returns to recreate the magic of Walt Disney’s Fantasia – an evening of selections from the classic film with clips on the Bowl’s big screen.  You’ll see your favorites, plus a glimpse into the brilliant artwork and unfinished segments of this Disney masterpiece.  The evening ends with fireworks that complement the spectacular beauty of this cinematic triumph.  Bring your drinks along and enjoy the evening!

We've got a large block of seats reserved at the front of section M2 in the Bowl, so all of the Maize and Blue can sit together.  If you already have Bowl tickets, we've also got a picnic-only option so you don't miss out.  This should be a fun-filled day that the whole family can enjoy!  Don't miss it!

2nd Annual Shakespeare by the Sea
Saturday, June 25th, 7:00 am – 11:00 pm
Point Fermen Park San Pedro, CA

If you have never been to Shakespeare by the Sea or maybe never heard of it here is the scoop. Shakespeare by the Sea is a free (yes you read correctly FREE) production of a Shakespeare play.  This year’s performance will be “MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING”.  The location is in Point Fermin Park in San Pedro.  The show starts at 8:00 but come early (around 7:00) and join are picnic in the park before the play.  Everyone is repsonsable for their own food and drink.

Getting to Point Fermin is easy.  Just take the 110 South till it dead ends into Gaffey St.  Turn Left and continue to head south on Gaffey till Gaffey dead ends into Point Fermin Park.  The parking lot in the park is usually full so park in the lot across the street from the park.  It will be on your right just before you enter the park.

Point Fermin Park is right on the ocean so it does get very chilly at night.  A heavy sweatshirt or a coat is a must and a blanket will also help besides having something to lay down on the ground for the picnic.  Bring a lawn chair for the show and in case we do not save any bench seats.

Finally if you are busy on June 25th but still think Shakespeare by the Sea sounds fun go to and check out the other shows not only in San Pedro but through out the South Bay, Orange County and Pasadena.

To register and let us know you are coming click here.
To learn more about Shakespeare by the Sea click here.
Any question please email

Hope to see you there.

If you have never read or seen "MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING" it is:
A classic romantic comedy about the battle of the sexes: Beatrice and Benedick create fireworks as they fight mutual attraction with razor-edged wit.

4th Annual Grand Prix San Diego
Time: Saturday, April 16 · 1:00pm - 9:00pm
Location: ON THE BEACH, in Mission Beach - 2917 Ocean Front Walk
Facebook Event Page: 4th Annual Grand Prix San Diego

Event Details: Meet us down at the beach again this year to celebrate our own Purdue Grand Prix here on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.... Now in it's 4th year, this event has grown from 40 people at a tiny beach cottage in 2008 to an anticipated 100+ Boilers congregating at a killer ocean-front condo in 2011.

We've got the condo all weekend long, so to take advantage, we'll be kicking things off with an informal all club potluck BBQ and fire-side mixer on Friday night. We'll have the BBQ ready to go by 6pm so swing by after work and enjoy a relaxing sea-side evening. Again, Friday is a POTLUCK event... bring your own everything folks.

The main event kicks off Saturday at 1pm... with pretty much everything fun included all day long. At a minimum plan to bring yourself, your I.D. and $20 (cash only). To bring the race spirit out west, we've added a trike race to the agenda... Yes. Trike race. You may want to brush up on your skills and bring your A-game.

If you plan to throw in a little extra party, please let us know if you'll be bringing any of the following needed items so we can plan for that:

· ICE... We'll need lots of ice.

· Additional Beverages / Food Items

· Ping Pong Balls

· Firewood... Lots of Firewood

· Beach Chairs

· Beach Volley Ball Net and Ball

· Party Playlist on an iPod or Laptop

· Other Fun Beach Items/Games

This event is ALL DAY and will go into an evening bonfire (and who knows after that) so feel free to swing by whenever. Also, watch the weather report and be sure to dress accordingly.
Boilers... we know you miss the days of Grand Prix back on campus. But what's better than a day of Boilering Up by the beach here in beautiful San Diego?!
