President's Letter:

Happy March Big Ten Club Members.

I hope you are not too tired from the dreaded Spring Ahead. We have some amazing events coming up for you, so please check the web site regularly.

Our annual Person of the Year Dinner will honor Mark Murphy, the former AD at Northwestern and current President and CEO of the Green Bay Packers.  Mark also happens to be a two-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl Champ with the Washington Redskins.  And hey, if this Giants fan is excited, you should be, too.  Mark is an amazing person and this is going to be one heck of a night.

While not as good at football, our Member of the Year is our own Jim Jacobs.  Jim is a past President of the club as well as the anchor for the club's community service projects.  Just do NOT ask him to throw a tight spiral.

This event will be Tuesday, April 9, 2013 from 6-9:30 PM.

Next up is the annual LA Regional Food Bank event, which will start at 8:45 am on Saturday, April 20th.  This is also a lot of fun and a really great and important way to help the community and those in our own backyard!

RSVP HERE to volunteer your time to make a difference

On Wednesday, July 3 we will bust out our cultural side with a fantastic evening of fireworks and music at the Hollywood Bowl, featuring the amazing Josh Groban.

RSVP now for great seats!

And finally stay tuned for our late summer shindig, the annual Caucus, which as always will be held at the Wrigley Mansion.

Thanks and have a Happy Spring.  Strange... I suddenly feel a kind of MADNESS going on.  Hmmm.  I wonder why?  Go Big Ten.

Go Big Ten!

Marc Goldsmith
President, Big Ten Club of Southern California

Big Ten Club Person of the Year 2013!

Please join us as we honor the former Northwestern Athletic Director and Green Bay Packers President and CEO

Mark Murphy

Mark Hodge Murphy is the current President & Chief Executive Officer of the Green Bay Packers, an American Football franchise competing in the National Football League. Prior to that, he was the athletic director at Northwestern University. He also enjoyed a successful playing career in the NFL as a Pro-Bowl safety for the Washington Redskins for eight seasons from 1977 to 1984.  Mark is believed to be the first person to earn a Super Bowl ring as a player (XVII, 1982) and as a team chief executive (XLV, 2010).

Big Ten Club Member of the Year 2013

James A. Jacobs

James (Jim) has been on the Board of Directors since 2003 and served as club president in 2010.  Jim currently serves as Community Service Chair, Club Historian and Executive Committee member.  Outside the club, Jim is the Assistant Director of Planned Giving at Claremont McKenna College, avid bicyclist (both road and mountain) and a big Green Bay Packers fan.  On the weekends you can often see him and his wife Jackie chasing around their dog Jenny.

What:  Big Ten Club Community Service Project: LA Regional Food Bank

Where: Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, 1734 East 41st Street, Los Angeles, CA 90058

When: Saturday April 20th, 8:45am – 12 Noon

Why:  Our annual service project this year will be bigger and better than ever as it will be co-sponsored by the Michigan State, Northwestern and Wisconsin alumni clubs. So come on out and bring your friends, whether or not they have a Big Ten connection. All are welcome. As we’ve done in past years, we’ll help to sort, clean and repackage donated food items for distribution to other charitable agencies that serve needy clients throughout the Greater Los Angeles area.

Then, when we’re done around 12 Noon, as is our custom, we’ll head out to an optional, no host luncheon at a Mexican restaurant that’s close-by. The luncheon is always lots of fun and a great way to continue the conversations you’ll have started that morning with your fellow volunteers. If interested in lunch (no obligation), please indicate your plans on the registration form.

This had turned into a wonderful tradition for the club – just ask anyone who’s volunteered in the past – and we look forward to having you join us. It makes for a rewarding morning, it’s free and you’ll receive good karma for another year.

And if you might like to support the good work of the Foodbank with a financial gift, you can do so by making an online donation at

Please note: the minimum age to volunteer is 14, no exceptions.

Still not sure you want to join us? Then think about these cool reasons:

    ·       Make a positive difference for our Los Angeles community.

    ·       It’s not horrible, far from it, some even claim it’s fun (and it is!).

    ·       Meet other good looking and smart Big Ten alumni

    ·       Advance the (very) good name of the Big Ten Club of Southern California.
