President’s Letter

It is with great honor and respect that I assume the role as President of The Big Ten Club of Southern California. I have served on the board of directors for many years, safely made it through the officer rotation and have enjoyed my time and the friendships I’ve made immensely.

This is a strong and vital club and an integral part of the local community, and so my goals are quite simple… to keep the club moving forward, to keep the wonderful energy and enthusiasm alive and in a very real sense, to keep things as they are. The current officers, board of directors, members and volunteers and those who have come before me have, and had amazing dedication. To all of you I say thanks.

I would like to mention two such wonderful and involved members who have recently left us… Fred W. Soldwedel and Dick Beals. Both served as Presidents of The Big Ten Club, both were honored as Members of the Year. And both gave so much of their time and passion to all of us. They will be sadly missed, but their legacy is quite evident in this amazing organization.

I look forward to spending time with all of you, and although I have no formal office, my door is always open. Please set aside Wednesday, August 15 for our Annual Summer Caucus and get ready for a year filled with fabulous events and community service projects.

I am proud to represent Northwestern and bring a little purple into the mix. Come on, we need a little love. Go Cats. Go Big Ten.

Marc Goldsmith

Big Ten Club Person of the Year Recap

Another excellent year of club events came to a close at the tournament house with our Person of the Year, Pat Richter, and Member of the Year, Derek Hildebrandt, receiving their well deserved praise from the club.  Mr. Richter shared some fun stories of his days in Madison both as a student athlete and athletic director while Derek showed us why he’s Member of the Year by helping run the PA system throughout the ceremony.

The classic club tradition of handing the outgoing president their blue jacket was revived this year with Steven Green graciously accepting and commenting that it meant he could once again limit his public speaking.  The night ended with another tradition when some amazing Wisconsin gear was auctioned off for the LA Wisconsin Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.  We all look forward to what next year will bring and welcome our new club president Marc Goldsmith.

Remembering BTC Past-Presidents Fred W. Soldwedel and Dick Beals

The month of May, unfortunately, saw the passing of two former Big Ten Club presidents, Dick Beals and Fred W. Soldwedel, both of whom will be missed by their many friends in the Club.

Dick Beals passed away on May 29 and was considered by many to be one of the greatest voice actors of all time. Dick’s most famous role may have been as Speedy Alka-Seltzer in the ad campaign that ran from 1954-1964 and is one of the classic campaigns of all time. Other roles, among many others, were as the title character in “The Gumby Show,” as the sidekicks Yank and Dan in the animated series “Roger Ramjet,” as one of the voices in “The Lone Ranger” and “The Green Hornet,” and in other shows and ad campaigns far too numerous to name. Many of us have heard Dick’s voice but never knew it was him.

A native of Detroit, Dick, graduated from Michigan State in 1949, where he was a member of the cheerleading squad. As an undergraduate, the story goes that the manager of the campus radio station steered Dick toward radio dramas in the 1940’s and the rest, as they say, is history.

Dick served as president in 1965 and remained an active Club member until only recently when the drive from Escondido to Los Angeles became a bit too much for him. He was also a motivational speaker who entitled his 1992 autobiography “Think Big,” a slight play on words as Dick was only 4’ 6” tall and weighed less than 70 pounds.

Dick does not have any immediate family survivors.

Fred W. Soldwedel died on May 14 following a 24 year gracious-yet-tenacious battle with Parkinson’s disease. Fred was an active and highly respected and dedicated community leader in the Pasadena area who served numerous civic organizations – the Bar Association, Chamber of Commerce, the Navy League, Rotary Club, the San Marino City Club, and the San Gabriel Valley Estate Planning Council, among others. Of special note is Fred’s service as president of the Tournament of Roses.

A native of Illinois, Fred enrolled at Northwestern in the fall of 1949, only a few months after the Wildcats won the 1949 Rose Bowl game. As a varsity football player, he had hoped to play for Northwestern in another Rose Bowl game, not knowing that the Cats would not make it out to Pasadena again until 1996. Fred served as president of the Big Ten Club in 1987 and was the second recipient of the Club’s new Person of the Year Award.

Fred was also a long-time member of the Tournament’s Football Committee and helped the Rose Bowl Game retain its prominence as one of the great Bowl games. He deeply cherished his friendships with university presidents, athletic directors, and faculty representatives across the country.

Fred was a devoted family man and our condolences go out to his wife, Donna, their three children including Fred D., also a Northwestern alumnus (as is Donna) and a past president of the Big Ten Club, and the many other members of the Soldwedel family.

We’re grateful for all that Dick and Fred gave to the Club and for the opportunity many of us had to benefit both from their leadership and friendship. They will be missed.
