BIG TEN CLUB
President’s Letter It is with great honor and respect that I assume the role as President of The Big Ten Club of Southern California. I have served on the board of directors for many years, safely made it through the officer rotation and have enjoyed my time and the friendships I’ve made immensely. This is a strong and vital club and an integral part of the local community, and so my goals are quite simple… to keep the club moving forward, to keep the wonderful energy and enthusiasm alive and in a very real sense, to keep things as they are. The current officers, board of directors, members and volunteers and those who have come before me have, and had amazing dedication. To all of you I say thanks. I would like to mention two such wonderful and involved members who have recently left us… Fred W. Soldwedel and Dick Beals. Both served as Presidents of The Big Ten Club, both were honored as Members of the Year. And both gave so much of their time and passion to all of us. They will be sadly missed, but their legacy is quite evident in this amazing organization. I look forward to spending time with all of you, and although I have no formal office, my door is always open. Please set aside Wednesday, August 15 for our Annual Summer Caucus and get ready for a year filled with fabulous events and community service projects. I am proud to represent Northwestern and bring a little purple into the mix. Come on, we need a little love. Go Cats. Go Big Ten. Mr. Richter shared some fun stories of his days in Madison both as a student athlete and athletic director while Derek showed us why he’s Member of the Year by helping run the PA system throughout the ceremony. The classic club tradition of handing the outgoing president their blue jacket was revived this year with Steven Green graciously accepting and commenting that it meant he could once again limit his public speaking. The night ended with another tradition when some amazing Wisconsin gear was auctioned off for the LA Wisconsin Alumni Association Scholarship Fund. We all look forward to what next year will bring and welcome our new club president Marc Goldsmith.
