July 2011

Dear Fellow BTC Members,

With the addition of Nebraska joining the Big Ten Conference, we too get the benefit of welcoming one of the largest and most passionate fan bases in Southern California.  As of July 1st, the Californians for Nebraska will also be a part of our Club.  Go Huskers!

Want a chance to win 2 FREE Rose Bowl Tickets?  Me too!  That is why I'm paying my dues by the 9/30 deadline as I will also then be eligible to purchase Rose Bowl tickets.  Watch your mailbox for membership applications and renewals in July.  Please make sure to update your contact info so you will continue to receive future communications.  You may also update your contact info by emailing

On a sad note, long time member and Club Past President, Hugh Tolford, recently passed away.  His friendship, dedication and continued efforts on behalf of the Club were truly valued. He will be missed dearly and our best wishes go out to his family.

Have a great summer and Go Big Ten!!

AAUM Members: $37 (Non-members: $45)
Picnic only: $14
Children under 2: FREE

Coming on August 21st, we've got a great summer day planned for the whole family!

First, join the UM Club of LA at Camrose Park for a fun filled Maize and Blue Picnic!  We've got a great spot in the Park reserved just for Wolverines, with food and fun all ready to go!  Fried chicken, sandwiches, potato salad, watermelon and more will all be there!  Old fashioned sack races, a pie eating contest, basketball toss and other games for all ages should make for an entertaining afternoon.  Parents can relax and admire from under the trees and the picnic tables surrounding our area.  The Club will provide the food and the fun, but bring your own drinks!  Bring a basket of soda, some beer, and a bottle of wine!

At 7:15 we will walk the short 100 yards next door to the Hollywood Bowl to continue the evening with some great music.  In celebration of the 20th anniversary of our very own Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, John Mauceri returns to recreate the magic of Walt Disney’s Fantasia by directing selections from the classic film with clips on the Bowl’s big screen.  You’ll see your favorites, plus a glimpse into the brilliant artwork and unfinished segments of this Disney masterpiece.  The evening ends with fireworks that complement the spectacular beauty of this cinematic triumph.  Bring your drinks along and enjoy the evening!

We've got a large block of seats reserved at the front of section M2 in the Bowl, so all of the Maize and Blue can sit together.  If you already have Bowl tickets, we've also got a picnic-only option so you don't miss out.  This should be a fun-filled day that the whole family can enjoy!  Don't miss it!

Negotiate the salary you are worth!  This career event will give you knowledge and practice to help you get closer to your goal.  If you are confident in negotiation, you may avoid the common pitfall of a lower starting salary which can lead to substantially lower earnings over the course of your career.
This event will start with a panel discussion so that you can hear from people who are making the hiring decisions as well as peers who have been successful with their own salary negotiations in the past.  We will then move into an active workshop where you will actually practice the patterns of the negotiation dance.  Additional topics covered in this evening include do's and don?ts, salary benchmarking, and understanding your employer and industry.  Further resources will be handed out to take home.

Resume reviewers will be on hand to give advice during the networking time before and after the panel and workshop.  Recruiter and panelist information will be provided closer to the event day--stay tuned!
