January 10, 2011
Dear Fellow BTC Members,
On behalf of the Big Ten Club Board of Directors, we want to wish
you the very best for a Happy New Year in 2011. While all of our teams may not
have won their bowl games, I trust that your holiday season was still an
enjoyable and memorable one.
As many of you know, December is one of busiest months for the
Club and this past year was no exception. Close to 100 members and friends
attended the annual holiday party (thanks to all of you who brought a gift for
some of the less fortunate children in our community), the Queen's Luncheon at
the Valley Hunt Club was another big success and, while the Badgers did not
prevail in the Rose Bowl game, it was quite a sight to see almost 3/4 of the
Rose Bowl covered in red and white. Several of us also attended the Rose Bowl
Hall of Fame's induction luncheon ceremony where Hardern Fry, former Iowa
coach, and Leroy Keyes, former Purdue star, were both inducted. It was a busy
month indeed and the Big Ten Club was well-represented all over town!
In looking ahead to 2011, I encourage you to participate in the
Club's many and varied activities. The Club's Board of Directors meets on
January 25 and March 29 and non-Board members are encouraged to attend and
learn more about the Club. We are especially hopeful that we can find
additional Board members from Iowa, Ohio State and Illinois. If interested in
learning more, please let me know.
Our annual spring community service project takes place on Saturday,
March 26 at the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank - if you have not yet volunteered
for this event, why not make this year the one that you do?! We always have a
great time while giving back to our local communities and then, afterwards,
we'll head out for an enjoyable lunch at a nearby Mexican restaurant. And the
annual Person of the Year dinner is set for Wednesday, April 13 when we'll
honor former Paramount Studies CEO (and Northwestern alumna) Sherry Lansing.
Finally, don't forget to check the Club's web site for all of the
latest news and upcoming events - http://www.bigtenclub.com/. Better
yet, why not bookmark it as one of your 'Favorites' so that you can easily
check it out on a regular basis!
We wish you the very best for the New Year and look forward to
seeing you soon at an upcoming Club event.
Go Big Ten!
Sincerely,
Jim Jacobs

BIG TEN CLUB - LOS ANGELES FOODBANK
Saturday, March 26th,
2011 from 8:45 AM - 12:00 PM (PT)
Los Angeles Regional Foodbank
1734
East 41st Street, Los Angeles, CA
We have fun. We do good. We'd love you to volunteer with us Saturday morning, March 26th, for our Club's annual community service project at the Los Angeles Regional Foodbank. Please RSVP by 3/20.
Our goal is to have 50 Big Ten friends to volunteer. The Foodbank is a non-profit organization that solicits, stores and distributes donated food and grocery projects to charitable agencies throughout the Greater Los Angeles area.
As we've done in past years, we'll sort, clean and repackage donated items for a morning under the direction of the Foodbank staff and then, if there's interest, we'll head off to lunch at a local restaurant. This is always a rewarding event to participate in, it's free, and you will receive good karma for another year.
Please note: the minimum age to volunteer is 14.
- Make a positive difference for our Los Angeles community
- It's really not horrible work...some even claim it to be fun
- Meet other good looking and smart Big Ten alumni
- Advance the good name of the Big Ten Club of Southern California
Co-Sponsored by the Northwestern University Club of Los Angeles.

Big Ten Club Members -- We printed brand new Club business cards for our members to have and pass out to interested parties and prospective members. We also established a permanent BTC mailing address and phone number for contacts. Besides welcoming our newest Nebraska members, these cards are excellent for chance meetings and to get people interested in the Big Ten Club. Send an email with your mailing address to secretary@bigtenclub.com and we'll send you some....help us spread the good word about the Big Ten Club!!!!
Big Ten Club Website – Help Wanted
Our Webmaster Steven Green will be President next year, and he'll have plenty to do for the Club. We are thinking of redoing the website and asking for a volunteer who can add content regularly and keep it updated. This is a very important part of our updated Communication plan, and help here would be very useful and greatly appreciated. The ideal person would have web design experience, a little graphic art knowledge and 3-4 hours a month available to help the Club. Please contact Alan Freeman, Communications Committee Chair atafreeman@bestOCevents.com or cell (714) 390-5190 if you would like to help in this important position.

For 21 years, the Los Angeles Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association (PSULA) has supported Hillsides, a foster care children's charity, through volunteer service. Although we are primarily known for our ongoing efforts to beautify the Hillsides campus, we are expanding our support of Hillsides through particpation in additional events as well.
Among those, this year, our chapter will be providing volunteers for Hillsides' annual benefit fundraiser, "Diamonds Are Forever". This event is the primary fundraiser for Hillsides, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. Our volunteers will be assisting with guest check-in, as well as the live and silent auctions. Our service ensures that the event runs smoothly, and is greatly appreciated by Hillsides!
For the first time, Dr. Drew Pinsky, host of the nationally syndicated radio talk show Loveline, as well as Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew on VH1, will serve as master of ceremonies and celebrity auctioneer. In addition to a chance to mingle with fellow alumni and hob-nob with celebrities, "Diamonds Are Forever" is a wonderful opportunity to expand our organization's contribution to Hillsides.
